My favourite garden poems are by Amy Lowell, an American. So many of the British garden poems are about roses, but Amy Lowell writes about poppies and tulips and lilies. She also writes about other cottage garden flowers like "hollyhocks and four o'clocks," but still. It makes a nice change from roses, anyway.

Hoar-Frost
In the cloud gray mornings
I heard the herons flying
And when I came into my garden,
My silken outer-garment
Trailed over withered leaves.
A dried leaf crumbles at a touch,
But I have seen many Autumns
With herons blowing like smoke
Across the sky.
Amy Lowell
